6 TIPS ON HOW TO SAVE MONEY
ON YOUR LOCAL TORONTO MOVE

One of the most common questions our clients ask us as moving day approaches is: "What can I do to make my move easier and faster?" We love this question because the honest answer is that a little planning goes a long way, and it can actually save you real money.

Most Toronto movers charge by the hour, which means finding smart ways to reduce time on the clock directly reduces your bill. These are the kinds of tips that not every moving company will volunteer, but at Six Moving, transparency is part of who we are. Here are six practical things you can do to speed up your local Toronto move and keep costs down.

1. Declutter before you pack

The less you move, the less you pay. Before you start packing a single box, go through your belongings and sort everything into three piles: keep, donate, and dispose. A lighter load means fewer boxes, fewer trips, and less time on the clock.

If you have furniture or household items you no longer need, consider donating them to a Habitat for Humanity ReStore location in Toronto. Six Moving can even drop off donations during store hours as part of your move. A garage or yard sale is another great option: you lighten your load and offset some of your moving costs at the same time.

Pro Tip: The less you bring, the easier unpacking will be at the other end.

2. Label every box

Labelling is one of the most underrated steps in the whole moving process, and skipping it costs you time. When each box is clearly marked with its contents and destination room, your movers know exactly where everything goes without having to stop and ask. That keeps things moving efficiently from the moment the truck pulls up.

As you pack, use a permanent marker to write the contents and the room on each box. Six Moving boxes have a dedicated section on the top for exactly this purpose. It also makes unpacking a lot less chaotic on the other side.

3. Seal & stage your boxes

Once packing is done, usually a day or two before your move, make sure every box is properly sealed. Tape the bottom and the top, running two strips along the opening and one strip down the centre. Use small boxes for heavy items and larger boxes for lightweight or bulky ones.

Once sealed, stack your boxes near the entrance of your home without blocking the path. Six Moving's movers typically load boxes first, so having them ready and accessible near the door saves a lot of back-and-forth. Stack by size, keep heavy boxes at the bottom, and do not stack more than five boxes high. Mark anything fragile or unstackable clearly. Six Moving carries fragile, do not stack, and glass labels as well as packing supplies, including boxes, bubble wrap, and tape. 4. Do a full sweep before moving day

Moving comes with a long to-do list, and it is very easy to leave things behind. Over the years, our movers have noticed the same spots get forgotten again and again: under the bed, in the attic, shower curtains, curtains on the walls, and items sitting in the dishwasher.

Before your movers arrive, walk through every room and check every corner. Our movers will always do a final walk-through with you, but the more prepared you are, the smoother things go. And since this is a local Toronto move, you can always go back for anything you missed, but it is better not to have to.

5. Minimize loose items

Loose items are anything that cannot be packed in a box, whether because of shape, size, or material. Think brooms, mops, floor lamps, vacuums, golf bags, skis, and gardening tools. These items have to be carried individually, which means extra trips and extra time.

To reduce that impact, group similar items together. Tape brooms and other long-handled items into a bundle. Place bags and backpacks side by side so several can be grabbed at once. A little organization here saves meaningful time on the clock.

6. Book Your Elevator and Parking Ahead of Time

This one is less of a tip and more of a necessity, but it gets missed more often than you would think.

If you are moving into or out of a condo, reserve your moving elevator in advance. Your building's concierge or management team will give you a time slot. Pass that information along to your moving coordinator at Six Moving and then, about 10 minutes before your movers arrive, confirm with building staff that the elevator is set up and ready. Movers waiting on an elevator are movers on the clock, so getting ahead of this makes a real difference.

Also, make sure you know where the loading dock or loading bay is located and share those details with your movers beforehand so they are not circling the building looking for access.

If you are moving out of a house, make sure there is parking available right out front. Park your own car there the night before to hold the spot, and give your neighbours a heads-up so they can clear space when your movers arrive. Pylons can also help reserve a second spot. The closer the truck can park to your front door, the faster the move goes. And check your street's parking restrictions before booking your start time.

If parking is not permitted before 10 am on your street, do not book a 9 am move. If you need a temporary parking permit, you can purchase one easily through the City of Toronto Parking Permit website.
